Hi Folks
I am moving to a 'busy' location, a 3 level townhouse in the centre of the city. It is on a busy thoroughfare and I am interested in how effective double glazing is with noise attenuation. Anyone had any experience with such an installation? Was it worth the money? I am planning to remove existing windows and replace.
Ive read the sales blurb, just want to know the experience of people having used or changed out to double glazing.
Thanks in advance.

Ok I didnt get much response (in reply at least) but have gone down the path somewhat. Found a comparatively cheaper supplier (after a lot of research), and come up with a solution.
Double glazing with a laminated external pane ~6.4mm and a 4 mm internal glass in non metal PVC frame. The chief reason for the double glaze is noise attenuation, but added benefits will be heating/cooling savings (knowing how power costs are increasing - this wiil be beneficial)
Let you know how it goes after install.

OK had half the windows installed and I am very happy. Noise has been cut drastically, suprisingly though just open the window a little bit how much noise comes in, so I am glad they have been installed properly.
The windows really work well.

That's an interesting question Jbocker. Good to see that your double glazing solution works effectively but could I also suggest that you consider double lined curtains if the noise is still very significant. Should help to reduce street noise by a few notches. You can either make it yourself or go out and buy it:

Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Thanks Chuck,
I wondered if i needed anything extra and thought about curtins, this sounds like a good approach. The double glazing certainly chopped out most of the noise, to a tolerable level at least. We will probably end up with slatted blinds - more for the look, rather than curtains.
We are putting in some internal walls during the renovation, and could put in some sound suppressing wall finishes, but again these may be stone in some sections and again for look more than anything else.
Renovating is fun! Yes fun. really. Gotta go now, time to put straight jacket back on! ;)

If you're going for double glazing consider integrated blinds
It will save you money no need for extra curtains or external blinds
I use them they work well

Integrated blinds would be a good solution, I assume these fit with the two sheets of glass.
We are looking for good blind solutions, slatted wooden ones are what we are favouring, but are concerned with stacked depth once blinds are pulled up. Also the durability after many times opening and closing them to gain access outside. We may put them on the upper two levels, but need to come up with a different solution on the ground floor which is a thoroughfare. Considered the fixed option attached to the door, but the handles are a problem.
